What is the Rite of Christian Initiation of adults?
Usually referred to as RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process by which adults are fully received into the Catholic Church. This happens when they receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist celebrated in a single liturgy during the Easter Vigil.
The RCIA is not a new concept dreamed up by the Second Vatican Council, but rather the revival of a practice known as the catechumenate followed in the first centuries of the Church. This prompts the question, why was it restored? The answer lies in the fact that when the bishops explored what the church really means for us today, they discovered that rather than a static, lifeless institution, the Church is the People of God who journey through life bonded in a community of faith. The bishops of the world wisely decided to emphasize anew a concept that had been lost over time, namely that the Church is a community of believers.
How does RCIA work?
Christian initiation is a journey into the mystery of God’s love within the church’s tender care (RCIA Manual 95). It begins in response to God’s presence and prompting in the life of a person and takes place within the parish community. The journey takes time and varies according to personal circumstances, the grace of God and the movement of the Holy Spirit
The community of faith meets people where they are and accompanies them through opportunities to encounter the mystery of Christ in life prayer, scripture, liturgy, and the life and mission of the parish community. Christian Initiation is a journey marked by conversion and discerning readiness to celebrate the sacraments of Initiation. Those initiated continue to hold a place of honor in the community and to be accompanied during the first year after initiation.
